Alonso reveals ‘only priority’ left in F1 and must be met

The two-time world champion won his two drivers’ championships in 2005 and 2006 with Renault. Since then, the Spaniard has failed to win antoher one, despite going close with Ferrari in 2010 and 2012.

Alonso joined Aston Martin for the 2023 season, replacing fellow world champion Sebastian Vettel, in hope of securing his third world title sometime.

The Spaniard got off to a good start with the Silverstone team. Aston Martin managed to produce a great car at the start of the 2023 season. Alonso was able to secure multiple podium finishes throughout the first half of the season.

However, since the second half of the season, Aston Martin’s pace dropped significantly and in 2024, the team finds themselves fifth in the constructors’ championship – way off Mercedes in foruth by 243 points.

Third world championship in F1
Alonso says he is “very, very focused” on F1 still, despite being the age of 43. The Spaniard will spend his third season with Aston Martin in 2025, before the new regulations in 2026. The 43-year-old said:

“I’m very, very focused [on] Formula 1 now. For the next two or three years, I want to win the third world title. This is my first and only priority at the moment.”

The Spaniard has had to prove that he is patient with Aston Martin’s project of winning the world championship – especially with the promising start in 2023.

Can Aston Martin and Alonso do it?
Despite the disappointing recent results, struggling to finish in the pounts positions in most cases, the Silverstone team has had many positive things for the future.

The main positive news being legendary car designer Adrian Newey joining the team for the 2025 season. Newey has contributed to 12 constructors’ championships and helped seven different drivers win a total of 12 combined drivers’ championships.

The move of Newey joining the team has boosted Alonso’s motivation significantly, describing it as a “dream partnership”. Aston Martin were able to beat Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton to the legendary designer’s signature.

Newey is not the only key signing Aston Martin have made, however. Ferrari’s Technical Director Enrico Cardile has joined the ranks, alongside Mercedes Power Unit Chief Andy Cowell also.

Whilst 2025 will be hard to challenge for the world championship. Alonso will be banking on 2026 to be the opportunity to do it with the new engine regulations.

Aston Martin will switch power unit suppliers for the 2026 season, going from Mercedes to Honda. This move also allowed the Silverstone team to be a works team rather than a customer team.
