Bubba Wallace opened up on the incident between him and Kyle Larson during the NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington, which potentially changed the race outcome. The situation helped one of Wallace’s 23XI Racing team owners, Denny Hamlin, who capitalized on the incident to secure his second Cup Series victory this year.
When four laps remained in the race, Wallace hit Larson from behind, causing him to spin into the inside wall. The incident marked Larson’s second spin of the day and brought out the caution flags. Unfortunately for Ryan Blaney, it compromised his lead in the race.
The overtime restart saw Blaney positioned behind Hamlin, Tyler Reddick, and William Byron, courtesy of a delayed pit stop. Hamlin’s crew executed a blisteringly fast pit stop and ensured he was the one to lead the race for two laps before the chequered flag was waved.
Bubba Wallace told me he didn’t think it was warranted for Larson to check up as much as he did after Reddick hit the wall but apologized for ruining Blaney’s day. He came up and whispered something in Blaney’s ear on pit road and Blaney declined to say what it was.”
We didn’t catch Kyle Larson before he left, but Cliff Daniels said Kyle told him he felt bad about being part of the last caution. They were trying to stay out of the way of the leaders and stay low, and Larson checked up early to make sure he didn’t get into Reddick, but Bubba didn’t know Larson was going to slow down that much.”
