A Spanish butcher with 30 years of experience has shared his thoughts on whether or not people should wash their raw chicken before cooking it – but not everyone agrees with his response
It’s common knowledge among even novice cooks that consuming raw chicken is a no-go due to the presence of harmful bacteria such as salmonella and E.coli. This can cause food poisoning – unless the chicken is thoroughly cooked.
El As Carnicero, a butcher with over three decades of experience in the meat industry, regularly shares his tips and recipes with his followers on TikTok. In one video, explained why he advises against washing poultry before cooking it.
He shared a story about a customer who requested her chicken be placed in a bag rather than wrapped in paper or put in a tray because she intended to wash it at home.
When El As Carnicero questioned her about this, she shared her hopes of removing “all the dirt and bacteria” from the chicken. However, the butcher then went on to highlight the risks associated with washing chicken and other types of meat.
