Emma Raducanu recruited Vladimir Platenik on a two-week trial ahead of Indian Wells but she has split with the coach in the wake of her first-round exit; British No 2 cruised through to the second round of the Miami Open with straight-sets win over Sayaka Ishii on Wednesday
Emma Raducanu is searching for a new coach after splitting with Vladimir Platenik following an unsuccessful two-week trial.
The British No 2 reached the second round of the Miami Open on Wednesday with a comfortable
Emma has utmost respect for Vlado and the work they started but it wasn’t quite heading in the right direction.
“Emma is now focused on doing as well as she can here in Miami after a solid start today and will continue looking for the right coach.”
I’m very pleased to have got through that, it’s not easy to play someone in the first round who’s younger, dangerous and in good form,” Raducanu told Sky Sports after her win in Miami.
I’m really proud of how I competed today. It hasn’t been easy for me coming into this but I think I put out a really good performance.”
Sky Sports News understands Raducanu decided to part ways with Platenik after a good week of training and that the decision came from her side, with Platenik hopeful she gained something from the fortnight.
Raducanu is back in the market for a coach, with a long-term successor to Nick Cavaday – who stood down for health reasons after her third-round Australian Open exit to Iga Swiatek – yet to be sourced.
Wednesday’s victory was only Raducanu’s second win since Cavaday’s departure. She bids to make that three against eighth seed Emma Navarro in the second round on Friday, live on Sky Sports.
“It’s going to be an extremely challenging match,” she added. “I think it will be a match where she’s probably in better form, so I think I can go out and try and express myself and compete for every point.
“She’s a great person. I think on the tour she’s someone I warm to and would like to say ‘hello’ to, so it will be a double Emma whenever we play.”
Raducanu is the last British woman standing in the tournament after Katie Boulter was beaten 6-4 6-2 by American Peyton Stearns.
Boulter asserted herself with a 3-1 first-set lead before Stearns adjusted to pick up four straight games and lead 5-3.
The 28-year-old took the next game but went on to lose the set and Stearns went on to dominate the second to comfortably advance into the next round.
