A former Formula One driver spoke out about his disappointment at being replaced by Max Verstappen in 2016, as he prepares to race in the Xfinity Series.
Former Formula One racer Daniil Kvyat is gearing up to continue his NASCAR journey as he gets ready to race at the Circuit of the Americas in the Xfinity Series. The ex-Red Bull star had previously expressed his disappointment, saying he felt “stabbed in the back” when he was replaced by Max Verstappen.
The decision to let the young Dutchman take his place at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix resulted in Kvyat being moved down to the lesser Toro Rosso team – this happened just two races after he had a podium finish at the Chinese Grand Prix. After this, the Russian driver never got his spot back on the Red Bull team, and he raced for Torro Rosso until 2020.

Fast forward eight years from that career-changing day, and it’s been a tale of two paths – with Verstappen proving himself as a modern great with three consecutive championships. On the other hand, the man he replaced has had a varied driving career which has included stints in NASCAR in the Cup Series and Xfinity Series
Now, the 29 year old is getting ready for another race in the latter competition, representing SS-GreenLight Racing in the No. 07 Chevrolet Camaro at COTA on March 23. Speaking previously about his motorsports journey, Kvyat took a philosophical view, as he discussed being replaced by Verstappen at Red Bull on the Track Limits podcast, saying: “I felt really betrayed at that moment.
