Former Formula 1 driver Jan Lammers has questioned whether Max Verstappen will be able to improve on his “special” 2023 campaign – and believes the coming years will truly show what he achieved.
Verstappen, 26, stormed to his third successive World Championship title after winning 19 out of 22 races. That smashed his own previous record of 15 from the season before, with Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez winning two and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz earning one victory.
Lewis Hamilton failed to win a race for the second successive campaign, while Verstappen finished a mammoth 290 points above second-place Perez in the Driver Standings. It was a dominant season from the Dutchman, but Lammers doesn’t think Verstappen will be able to do any better than his 575 points from 22 races.
When quizzed about Verstappen’s campaign, he told the Dutch edition of Motorsport.com: “How much better can you have it? I think the future will show how special it is what he has achieved [in 2023]. Of course, it’s just in the ambition of a sportsman and a team to make the impossible possible every time again.

These are records you break then, so I’m sure they will try to improve on this. But certainly from a Dutch perspective, this season deserves a 10. But how much better can you have it for the spectator, especially the Dutch? The competition was also good, because it was not always obvious that Max would win.”
Verstappen requires five more titles to eclipse both Michael Schumacher and Hamilton, who both hold the record for the most World Championships on seven apiece. The Belgian-born driver will be eyeing up that record, and despite questioning whether he will race as well as he did in 2023, Lammers has hinted he sees Verstappen dominating the sport – like Lionel Messi in football – for years to come
