Fernando Alonso insists Aston Martin’s current form “would be tougher to digest” if F1’s major rules reset was not coming after another “heartbreaking” miss.
Alonso qualified 13th and finished 11th in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, 8.9s behind Isack Hadjar who nabbed the final point as his point-less start to the season continued.
Alonso has two DNFs, two P11s and a P15 to his name in 2025 – the first time he has not scored a point in the first five races in which he has started since McLaren in 2017.
better news for Aston Martin, Lance Stroll is inside the top 10 in the standings with 10 points, after hauls in Australia and China, but the team did return from the Japan-Bahrain-Saudi triple-header not adding to its tally.
The performance has dropped off for the team in the final year of the current regulations, but Alonso insists he can accept that, knowing the major chance the team has to ace the all-new 2026 regulations, which new technical signing Adrian Newey is currently working on at the new state-of-the-art factory.
“I hope there is stuff coming which will change the situation as at the moment, we are not where we want to be,” Alonso told media including RacingNews365.
“Japan and [Saudi Arabia] was heartbreaking to be P11 and with the race we did, not to score any points or have any luck is sad, but we will keep pushing.
“When you are fighting for the podium, we will give 100%, and when we are fighting for P12 or P11, we will still give 100%, so that is what we will continue to do in the next races and all through this year.
“It is going to be difficult to score any points, but we will keep trying.
“There is nothing we can do now, but next year is a complete reset, and we have great people in the team working on next year’s car.
“So the trust is maximum on the new management and new people, and the team is getting ready for that moment.
“If the regulations were stable, and next year we have the same cars as now, it would be tougher to digest.”
