A judge ruled in Ja Morant’s favor in a lawsuit over a fight during a pickup basketball game. Morant is accused of punching a teenager after the teen threw a basketball at his head.
According to a judge, Morant is protected by the state’s self-defense laws.
The lawsuit was filed nearly two years ago and the latest ruling is based on testimony that was heard back in December. That ruling, though, does not mean the lawsuit is over.

“Rough. I mean that’s the easiest way to put it,” Trent Crump, a Grizzlies fan, said when asked how the season has been without Morant. “It has been rough.
Over the last two seasons, Morant has faced trouble on and off the court. After serving two suspensions for separate incidents of brandishing a gun on social media, his season ended in January due to a labrum tear.
One of his off-court controversies appears to be sorting itself out now.
“You have guns, you have fights,” Crump said. “It’s scary, but as a fan, you hope everything is good.”
According to court records, Morant invited then-17-year-old Joshua Holloway and several other players to his family’s home in July 2022 for a series of pickup games. After Morant repeatedly scored on Holloway, he allegedly refused to check the ball, then threw it at Morant’s face.
According to witnesses, Morant questioned the teen, who pulled up his shorts and squared up with Morant.
That’s when Morant allegedly punched him.
