The Grizzlies star returned from suspension related to gun-themed social media videos
Former NBA player John Salley defended Memphis Grizzlies’ Ja Morant, stating that the recent gun-related celebration after a dunk was simply a part of hip-hop culture and not indicative of any ill intentions.
It has to be remembered that Morant had just returned from a 25-game suspension related to gun-themed social media videos.
“He’s not saying, ‘Forget ya’ll — I got my gun!'” Salley said.
“He probably didn’t even realize it. It’s nothing meaning anything.
“I don’t think he’s trying to mock anybody. I don’t think he’s trying to be mean about it.”
“Leave Ja Morant alone … Leave him alone.”
Salley’s perspective contrasts with critics on social media who found the celebration tone-deaf given Morant’s recent suspension.
Contrary to initial interpretations, Morant’s recent celebration involving gun-like hand gestures was not related to any firearms context.
Morant was actually performing the “Rock Ya Hips” dance, a popular dance originating in New Orleans, popularized by influencers Subtweet Shawn and T99zy.
The dance involves a distinctive side-to-side rocking motion with stretched-out arms and hands, and it has gained popularity in the sports world, with athletes including NFL players incorporating it into their celebrations.
“It was not a gun celebration; He was doing the Rock Ya Hips Dance,” Subtweet Shawn explained.
