The esses section at COTA is a challenging and technically demanding part of the track. Many drivers struggle to navigate this section effectively, especially due to the strict enforcement of track limits during the NASCAR Cup Series race.

Chase Elliot fell victim to the strict track limits when his car became unstable while maneuvering through the esses. He had to correct the car’s position, which resulted in crossing the track limits and consequently receiving a penalty pass. Elliot promptly informed his crew chief about the incident.

Despite Elliot’s plea, NASCAR rejected his request and imposed two consecutive penalties on laps 39 and 40. This unfortunate sequence of events caused Elliot to miss the opportunity to achieve a top 5 result of the season, dropping to 16th place and effectively ending his race.
