Kyle Busch Got Emotional Over Greatest-Ever NASCAR Comeback

Kyle Busch’s 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup season is one of the most amazing comeback stories you’ll ever hear in racing. What began as a catastrophic setback, a devastating crash at Daytona International Speedway that left him with a compound fracture in his right leg and a broken left foot, transformed into an inspirational journey culminating in his first NASCAR Cup Series championship.

The injuries were serious. Busch had to sit out the first 11 races of the Cup season. People weren’t just wondering if he could win a championship — they were wondering if he’d even race again that year. But the eventual champion wasn’t about to give up.

He worked incredibly hard on his recovery. His doctors were surprised at how quickly he healed. By late May, he was back in his car at Charlotte Motor Speedway and finishing 11th in the Coca-Cola 600. Not bad for someone who’d been in a hospital bed just months earlier!

The Remarkable Rise of Kyle Busch

What ensued was nothing less than phenomenal. In 19 starts upon his return, Busch racked up four wins, including three in a row and a victory in the highly regarded Brickyard 400. This phenomenal performance earned him a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup despite missing close to a third of the regular season.

The story reached its perfect ending at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Busch started the race in third place and grabbed the lead after a late restart. He held on to win not just the race but his very first NASCAR Cup Series championship. This wasn’t just a win for him, it was Toyota’s first championship in NASCAR’s top series and a title for rookie crew chief Adam Stevens.

Busch Reflects on His Standout Season

Looking back at his initial reaction to the crash, Busch admitted, “It was a natural reaction initially [that] I did think the season was over. I did think that it would probably take a full 12 months to recuperate and recover and be back to normal.”

Speaking about his medical team, he shared, “I feel like I’ve had some of the best doctors in the world working with me. … They’ve really helped me and pushed me tremendously. Without them, I don’t know that this announcement would have been today. It would have been probably later down the road.”

Describing the emotional moment of victory, Busch recalled, “As I came off turn four and saw the finish (line), the emotions started to hit me. I had tears in my eyes, and as I crossed the finish line, I just started yelling and screaming. We did it.”

After clinching the championship, he called it “a dream come true” He also expressed gratitude to his supporters saying, “something that happens only every so often. I just can’t believe it with everything that happened this year, all the turmoil that I went through, my wife went through, my family went through and people around me went through.
