Larson

Kyle Larson left everyone in shock after announcing his retirement

Kyle Larson, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Champion, and William Byron, a 14-time Cup race winner, are taking a step back into the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series this season. And they won’t be just making laps. They’re climbing into Spire Motorsports’ No. 07 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Silverado for three races that might as well come with a “Win or Bust” sign on the door.

Larson—Elk Grove, California’s finest and a man who could probably win a race in a shopping cart—will take the No. 07 truck to Homestead-Miami Speedway on March 21 for the Baptist Health 200. Then, he’s back in the saddle two races later at Bristol Motor Speedway on April 11 for the Truck Race at that short track battleground.

Byron will split the difference, taking the wheel at Martinsville Speedway on March 28. And if that sounds familiar, it’s because the last time he ran a truck there, he won—delivering Spire Motorsports’ first-ever Truck Series victory in the process. No pressure, right?

Spire Motorsports co-owner Jeff Dickerson knows exactly what’s at stake when two of Hendrick Motorsports’ biggest stars roll up with their names on the roof rails.

“One of the coolest things of having a Craftsman Truck Series team is to have the crossover from Hendrick Motorsports and Hendrick Automotive Group,” said Dickerson. “We’ve had all their drivers in our trucks from time to time, and to have two guys in William (Byron) and Kyle (Larson), who have won races with us back in the seat, certainly gives the team a little more pep in our step. It also raises the bar for those races to win or bust. You don’t show up with those guys to do anything else but win.”

Larson, aka “Yung Money,” has got unfinished business in the Truck Series. The 32-year-old has three starts at Homestead, including a pole, two top-fives, and a near-win in 2014. Bristol, on the other hand, is a sore spot. His only Truck race there came in 2021 on dirt, and thanks to some on-track chaos, he ended up 35th.

Now? He’s out for redemption.

“I love racing at Homestead-Miami (Speedway) and Bristol (Motor Speedway), so I’m excited to add those Truck races to my schedule,” said Larson. “Hopefully, we can put on a great show with HendrickCars.com on board and battle for the victories in the Spire truck.”
