Lewis Hamilton fears confirmed by Red Bull chief as Mercedes launches…

Max Verstappen’s emphatic victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix saw him wrap up the F1 season on a positive note after dominating proceedings for the entire campaign. The Dutchman earned more than double the points tally of Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez and will be the hot favourite to make it four titles in a row in 2024.

However, it remains to be seen whether the likes of Lewis Hamilton or Lando Norris will be able to challenge Verstappen for next year’s end-of-season honours. The former is still chasing an eighth world title but will need Mercedes to give him a quicker car in order to rival Red Bull for victories on a consistent basis.

Norris, meanwhile, could be set to emerge as Verstappen’s closest contender if McLaren keep developing their car on an upward trajectory. The Woking squad have come on leaps and bounds over the last few months and will have high hopes of pulling off a surprise title challenge when next season gets underway.

George Russell has received support from Sergio Perez for suggesting that F1 staff members should banned from working at every Grand Prix during a season due to its fatiguing effects.

“Yeah, surely,” said Perez when asked about the idea of stopping staff members from working every race. “But obviously, it’s something that we’re going to raise it up to try and see what can be done. Probably now it’s late for next year but for the year after to really try to maximise it. I don’t remember seeing people so exhausted in the last race. I think it’s something that we’ve got to be taking very seriously because it’s important for the sport. For the drivers, too.”

George Russell has insisted that Mercedes’ struggles with their W14 challenger will give them a clearer picture of what needs to be done to fix things next year.

“I think we’re taking a clean slate into next year’s car,” said Russell.

“I think that the positive is we’re not scratching our heads why we’re so far behind Red Bull.

“We see so many flaws with this car, which gives every single person back at the factory so much motivation and fire to chase after those problems and find those solutions, which we think will make a good step into next year.

“Of course, I expect Red Bull to make a step again, but I’ve got no doubt come Bahrain that we’ll be in a stronger position than we were in Bahrain this year.”
