Red Bull star Max Verstappen will start the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix from pole position after overcoming three underwhelming practice sessions to clock the quickest lap in qualifying. The Dutchman will start the race ahead of McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Verstappen has won four of the first six races this season but was surprisingly beaten to the chequered flag by Norris at the Miami Grand Prix last time out. And the 26-year-old will be under pressure to return to winning ways in Italy and stamp out McLaren’s hopes of launching an attack on the F1 title.

McLaren ace Lando Norris has labelled people “stupid” if they thought Max Verstappen wouldn’t recover to enjoy a decent qualifying performance at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Verstappen suffered misery during his free practice sessions but then enjoyed a fine showing in qualifying as he bagged pole position.
“Max hasn’t had the smoothest weekend, but I think if anyone doubted Red Bull or him coming back and doing a good job in qualifying, they’re a bit stupid,” Norris said on Saturday. “We expected them to be back on track.”
