Martin Truex Jr. enters NASCAR’s ‘real’ season, and he’s still writing his history

Many in the NASCAR Cup Series garage area believe the “real” season begins Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a race that represents the first non-drafting track of the season.

Last we saw Martin Truex Jr. in such a scenario, he was limping to the finish after a miserable playoffs dropped him from regular-season champion to 11th in the standings.

Martin Truex Jr. was mad at just about everyone at the end of Sunday’s race at Richmond, banging doors with Kyle Larson after the checkered flag before smashing into the back of teammate Denny Hamlin.

Truex Jr. dominated the latter stages of Sunday’s NASCAR event at Richmond before Larson spun with just two laps to go, setting up a green-white-checkered overtime finish. Hamlin won the battle on pit road to grab the lead and got a good jump on the restart in cruising to his second win of the year.

Hamlin’s fire off was too good, if you ask Truex Jr.

Truex led 228 laps before settling for fourth place. Joey Logano finished second with Larson rounding out the top three.
