Max Verstappen said he and Fernando Alonso “know that we want to” compete together at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the future.
one of the most famous events in all of motorsport, the Le Mans endurance race has always attracted some of the biggest names. Alonso is no stranger to the Circuit de La Sarthe, having won the event twice while racing in the World Endurance Championship during his hiatus from Formula 1.
Verstappen has yet to have a go at the event, but is certainly eyeing it in the future. And he has revealed in the past that he and Alonso have discussed the idea of sharing a car.
the past, the Dutchman has also expressed a desire to take part in the race with his father, former F1 racer Jos. However, that no longer looks to be on the cards as the Red Bull racer told Mirror Sport that he and Aston Martin star Alonso will have to find a third driver.
Admitting that he is not likely to be short of potential team-mates when the time comes to take on the event, he added: “It’s fine, let’s see what happens. A lot of things can happen. There are many great drivers that you can pick from. I have a lot of friends also who race, so it will be hard to pick one.”
Verstappen does have one important criterion when it comes to selecting another driver, though, as he revealed last year when he said: “The only thing is, for Le Mans, there’s no minimum weight for the driver. I’m quite a heavy competitor, so I would have to find light team-mates to compensate. Fernando is quite light so that would be very good for us, but we would need to find another one.”
