Max Verstappen Teases Le Mans Pairing With Fernando Alonso

Red Bull driver and three-time world champion Max Verstappen revealed his desire to race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside two-time Le Mans winner and Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso in the future.

The idea of competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans might have been sparked by Max Verstappen’s father, Jos Verstappen, who participated as an LMP2 class driver back in 2008.

While some Formula 1 drivers venture into other racing disciplines, Max Verstappen is eager to explore opportunities beyond the premier class of motorsport. However, his ambition may have to wait until after his Red Bull contract expires in 2028.

Verstappen was questioned about the possibility of him participating in competitions beyond Formula 1 during his presence at the recent Honda Racing Thanks Day, which featured various sports cars, bikes, and single-seaters. Talking about his Le Mans goals, he told Formula1.com:

“Le Mans I definitely would like to do.

“I’ve been there already when my dad used to race and the atmosphere is amazing. It’s endurance, so many people, driving through the night, sunrise – I think it’s really cool.”

Since Le Mans demands a driver team, Verstappen was asked to pick names he would like to race alongside. Unsurprisingly, he mentioned 2018 and 2019 winner Alonso, who paired with Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima for Toyota Gazoo Racing. He said:

“I’ve been speaking to Fernando about it. He said he would only want to do it with me again. That would be really cool.

“The only thing is that for Le Mans there is not really a minimum weight for the driver. I’m quite a heavy driver, so I need to find light team mates to compensate. Fernando is quite light, so it would be quite good, but then we need to find another one – I need to have a look!”

Additionally, the Dutch driver discussed high-performance vehicles from different motorsport categories. He added:

“For sure, I would like to try a MotoGP bike.
