Mick Schumacher was 14 when his famous father suffered devastating brain injuries, after which he says he had to ‘find his own feet’ – plus his engagement to a Danish beauty queen may just be a rumour
As the son of seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher and equestrian Corinna Schumacher, Mick Schumacher seemed to have a predestined sporting career.
However, it hasn’t always been a smooth ride for the Swiss-born German driver, 25, who has had to work extra hard to carve out a name for himself in a sport often overshadowed by his megastar father’s legendary career.
Although he’s the son of a motor-racing world champion, Mick is named after Australia’s five-time 500cc motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan, reports the Daily Mirror. But his family ties to motorsport run even deeper. His uncle, Ralf Schumacher, also achieved success in F1, winning six races during his career, while his cousin David Schumacher is also a racing driver, competing in sports cars.
In 2014, Schumacher jump-started his career when he made a name for himself in karting, finishing second in the world, European and German junior championships, according to his official biography. The following year he took a big step into the world of formula racing, joining the Van Amersfoort Racing team for the German Formula 4 Championship. In 2016 he moved to the Prema Powerteam and enjoyed an impressive season, finishing second overall in both the German and Italian F4 championships.
Schumacher eventually followed in his famous dad’s footsteps in 2019, signing with the Ferrari Driver Academy, per FIA F2. In 2021 and 2022, Mick competed for the Haas F1 team in the FIA Formula One World Championship. Sadly for Schumacher, he was ditched by Haas after the 2022 season following a series of expensive crashes and lacklustre rankings, per Formula One. For 2023 and 2024, he bagged the role of reserve driver for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team, as detailed on his website.
Schumacher was reportedly in talks to join Ferrari’s Hypercar programme in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) for the 2025 season, according to Motorcyle Sports, but the deal never materialised, leaving him with Alpine’s WEC team. His failure to secure an F1 seat for this year, despite many new rookie signings, doesn’t look good for his future at that level. He posted on an Instagram Story: “Life doesn’t always go as planned and setbacks can be tough to face. But every challenge is a chance to learn, grow and come back even stronger.”
Schumacher didn’t compete under his famous surname until he started his Formula career, instead driving under pseudonyms “Mick Betsch” (his mother’s maiden name) and “Mick Junior”, per FIA F2. “I’d used different names to sort of race undercover, improve without too much notoriety of being ‘my father’s son’,” Schumacher told Under Armour during a 2020 interview. “But honestly, I don’t feel any pressure to carry on the family name or do exactly what my father did. Most of the stress comes from what I put on myself, thinking about what I did wrong and how I can improve.”
