Mick Schumacher has been warned by his legendary dad’s old Ferrari teammate, Rubens Barrichello, that he’s only “as good as your last race” and that he faces a fight with several top F2 prospects for another shot at a full-time seat in Formula 1. Schumacher is currently Mercedes’ third driver after losing his seat at Haas at the end of 2022.
However, with seats opening up across the F1 grid at the end of this season, Schumacher could be handed a second shot, with Lewis Hamilton departing the Silver Arrows for Ferrari, as well as Alpine. The latter could be a more realistic option for Schumacher, with both Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly considering their options. Schumacher is also signed for Alpine’s World Endurance Championship squad this year in Hypercars.
Schumacher will face heavy competition for a full-time F1 seat, though, with several talented drivers also waiting for their shot. Prema’s Oliver Bearman successfully stepped in for Carlos Sainz at Ferrari in Saudi Arabia this year, scoring six F1 championship points, and Mercedes are hot on Andrea Kimi Antonelli. And Barrichello, an 11-time F1 Grand Prix winner and former Ferrari teammate of Schumacher’s dad Michael between 2000 and 2005, has warned the 25-year-old that he faces a fight.

“In Formula 1, you are as good as your last race,” Barrichello told Express Sport. “If you’re not there, they kind of forget. We have Felipe Drugovich, who is our Brazilian driver and Aston Martin’s third driver. His test in Bahrain was just fantastic. Do you remember when Lance Stroll had a problem with his hand? With that kind of material [the car], it was phenomenal.
