Mick Schumacher to drive his father’s Mercedes W02

Pirelli test in Barcelona after the Spanish Grand Prix. Now, the German continues his role as the team’s reserve driver and will be able to make his Goodwood Festival debut in a special way, in one of the cars driven by his father, Michael Schumacher.

The car chosen for the occasion is the Mercedes W02, the second car designed and built by the Brackley-based team in Formula 1 following the acquisition of Brawn GP at the end of the 2009 season and driven by Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg. The car scored regular points throughout that year, yet it remains the only Mercedes car to date to have failed to finish on the podium. Its best result: fourth place in the rain-affected Canadian GP.

The last of his father’s teams to try out
“It’s going to be spectacular to race the car my father drove in 2011, the W02, even if it’s just a short race. Just to experience this generation of cars will be amazing,” said Mick Schumacher, who is particularly looking forward to being back on track in one of his father’s cars.

The 24-year-old has already driven cars from the other three teams his father raced for in F1 – Jordan, Benetton and Ferrari – and will complete the quartet with his Mercedes career. “I’ve been lucky enough to drive one of his Benetton cars and some of the Ferraris he raced, but this will be the first time behind the wheel of a Mercedes he drove. I’m sure I’ll come out of it with a big smile on my face,” he says.

Mick Schumacher will not be the only driver at Goodwood in a Mercedes. Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez will drive a W12, with which the team raced in 2021, when Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas led them to the constructors’ title
