Novak Djokovic celebrates Real Madrid’s goal

Novak Djokovic arrived in Madrid early, preparing to chase his fourth crown in Caja Magica. The champion  from 2011, 2016 and 2019 has been training in the Spanish capital for a couple of days alongside his coach, Andy Murray.

Real Madrid and Athletic Club failed to create opportunities in the opening set. Real Madrid made more efforts to score a goal in the second time, with Vinicius Jr.’s one being disallowed due to an offside. Finally, Federico Valverde sent Los Blancos over the top with a goal in the stoppage time.

After enjoying a night off, Novak will continue with his preparations for the Madrid Masters. The Serb will seek his 100th ATP title in the Spanish capital, having won the 99th at last year’s Olympic Games in Paris. World no. 5 is 12-6 in 2025.

Djokovic fell to Reilly Opelka in Brisbane before reaching the Australian Open semi-final. The 24-time Major winner ousted Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-final but injured his right leg. He retired after the opening set in the semi-final duel against Alexander Zverev.

Novak suffered an early loss in Doha to Matteo Berrettini and experienced another early defeat in Indian Wells. The 37-year-old raised his level in Miami and played well en route to the final. He faced the 19-year-old Jakub Mensik and experienced a tight 7-6, 7-6 loss.

Djokovic and Mensik traded breaks in the opening set and remained neck and neck. However, the young gun stepped in and clinched both tie breaks to move over the top. Novak could not repeat that run in Monte Carlo, losing early to Alejandro Tabilo.

Djokovic had trained in Marbella before heading to Madrid, where he wants to chase the elusive 100th ATP title.
