Novak Djokovic to play doubles with Fernando Verdasco in Spaniard’s farewell

The 37-year-old Djokovic will be in action for the first time since sustaining a muscle tear in his left leg which forced him to retire during the Australian Open semifinals against Alexander Zverev of Germany.

Former World No. 7 Fernando Verdasco will retire from professional tennis after playing doubles with Novak Djokovic at next week’s Qatar Open, the Spaniard announced on Friday.

The 37-year-old Djokovic will be in action for the first time since sustaining a muscle tear in his left leg which forced him to retire during the Australian Open semifinals against Alexander Zverev of Germany.

After so many incredible years on the ATP Tour, the time has come for my final tournament at the Qatar Open 2025. And what better way to finish than playing doubles with my friend Novak Djokovic , a true legend of our sport and one of the best athletes of all time,” wrote the 41-year-old Verdasco, sharing a video featuring the Serbian on social media.

The left-handed Verdasco won seven titles on the ATP Tour in a two-decade-long career. His best result at a Major came in 2009 when he reached the Australian Open semifinals before losing to eventual champion and compatriot Rafael Nadal in five sets in five hours 10 minutes, the longest match of his career. He also helped Spain win three Davis Cup titles.

In doubles, Verdasco clinched eight titles, including the 2013 Nitto ATP Finals with David Marrero and reached a career-high of World No. 8 in the doubles rankings.

Verdasco played his first match in over a year when he paired up with Turkiye’s Cem Ilkel at an ITF event in Doha last month.
