Mercedes reserve driver Mick Schumacher hopes to have a permanent position on the Formula One grid again and is counting on the driver market at the end of the season, when the contracts of 14 of the 20 F1 drivers are due to expire.
“It could be an advantage for me, that the driver market is already quite active and will continue to grow in the coming months. A lot will happen. Not only there will be changes in the teams, but one or two drivers could also end their careers,” Schumacher told the Sport Bild weekly on Wednesday.
The son of F1 record champion Michael Schumacher competed in F1 himself, in 2021 and 2022. He didn’t get a regular cockpit last year and for 2024 but is a test and reserve driver for Mercedes.
He will also compete in the 2024 World Endurance Championship for Alpine, which will take him to the famous French venue of Le Mans, where his father raced as well before his glittering F1 career.

Mick Schumacher, however, believes that he has what’s necessary to make a comeback to F1.
“I know that I have the skills for it. I’m good enough. I showed that in Formula 4, Formula 3 and Formula 2. The fact that I won races and championships will be quickly forgotten,” he said.
“I proved that I can drive as well as handle the pressure. And Formula 1 is not that different,” Schumacher added.
