Alonso

The FIA has made its decision, and Fernando Alonso won’t be happy about it

Up to six drivers (Antonelli, Piastri, Leclerc, Ocon, Sainz, Stroll, and Gasly) were investigated for a safety car infraction after the race had ended—an issue that led Alonso to firmly believe he should gain three positions due to penalties

However, the FIA did not see it that way.

Five hours after the end of the Canadian Grand Prix, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) issued its verdict on a multi-driver investigation involving up to six drivers: Antonelli, Piastri, Leclerc, Ocon, Sainz, Stroll, and Gasly.

All of them were being investigated for allegedly committing an infraction under safety car conditions after crossing the finish line—when the race had officially ended—as they overtook other cars while the safety car procedure was still in effect.

In response, Fernando Alonso publicly demanded that all of those cars be penalized. After finishing 7th, he argued that he should have been classified 4th because Antonelli, Piastri, and Leclerc—who all finished ahead of him—deserved penalties. But that was not the case.

The FIA had already dealt with a similar situation last year at the 2024 Azerbaijan GP, where it issued warnings—rather than penalties—to Verstappen, Ocon, Gasly, and Hülkenberg for similar behavior, deciding not to alter the race results.

In that ruling, the FIA warned that “future violations” of the same nature “could result in significant sanctions.” However, the same type of incident occurred again this Sunday, and once more the FIA opted to handle it the same way—with a warning that does not impact the final classification.

FIA Disagrees With Alonso’s Firm Position

The FIA’s final decision likely didn’t sit well with Fernando Alonso, who had spoken firmly and clearly on the matter just hours earlier on live television: “That is non-negotiable; there should be penalties,” he exclaimed.

“I believe there are some investigations underway for overtaking under safety car conditions, so hopefully I’ll be P4 or P5 in a couple of hours,” he said. “There are a few investigations for overtaking under the safety car and that is non-negotiable. If you overtake under yellow flags with the steering wheel full of ‘Safety Car’ indicators, there should be a penalty. I hope this isn’t one of those times where they say, ‘Next time, remember you can’t overtake under a Safety Car,’ and then do nothing today,” added the Spaniar
