After the race at Pocono on Sunday (July 14), Kyle Larson has addressed NASCAR penalizing him for speeding in pit lane. The Hendrick Motorsports driver, along with his teammate Chase Elliott and Joe Gibbs Racing’s Ty Gibbs, was sent to the rear of the field in Stage 3, taking him out of contention to win the race.
Speaking about this in a post-race interview, as per Fronstretch, Kyle Larson shared his thoughts on whether it was he who was at fault or if it was a mistake from NASCAR’s end with the penalty.
“I’m not sure yet. I’ll have to talk to, I guess the team. I think it sounds like, yeah, Section 7 (of the pit road) is different maybe than it was in the past. Bit of a bummer, just cause, I didn’t push it. I didn’t push it over our max. Like I never thought I would be speeding. So when they came on the radio and said that we would be speeding, I was surprised,” Larson said.
He claimed it was an unfortunate situation, even though he wasn’t sure if he would’ve won the race. However, Kyle Larson was certain that without the penalty, he would have finished better than 13th place. And because of that, Chase Elliott has leapfrogged him in the regular season championship battle, something Larson is closely monitoring.

Before the race when Kelly Crandall of Racer asked the #5 driver whether he’s paying attention to the championship battle, Larson had a thumping response.
“Absolutely, I pay attention to it every week, and I would imagine everybody probably does — even the guys that say they don’t. I pay attention to it a lot,” Larson said
The 2021 Cup champion claimed that all those in contention for the championship “probably feel” that they’ve missed out on opportunities to get more points. In fact, Larson emphasized how he wishes to have Iowa and Chicago back where he could’ve been “more conservative” and potentially have had a 60-point lead.Having said that, the HMS driver added that while it’s frustrating, they still have six races left to run more consistently and get the points.
It’s worth mentioning that Kyle Larson gave a shout-out to Tyler Reddick for quietly making his way to the top of the table. Reddick is currently in 3rd place on the standings and Larson believes a big reason behind that is inconsistency from him, Elliott, and Denny Hamlin. But Larson remained confident of his own chances, claiming the #5 team has to continue getting the stage points and get back at finishing races.
