The past year has been a rough one for Ja Morant. After picking up a 25-game suspension for a pair of firearm incidents, Morant played in just nine games this season before he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. While he made a successful return to the court, the Memphis Grizzlies point guard still has a lot to prove to basketball fans everywhere, including former players such as Sebastian Telfair.
Telfair had his own gun controversy during his NBA career, and that led him to be upset with Morant due to his pair of incidents.
The retired NBA point guard had his fair share of legal issues, and one such incident came early in his career with the Portland Trail Blazers.
“Bassy” had a loaded gun on him at an airport, and despite claiming it was his girlfriends’, he had to deal with the potential repercussions from the NBA. Telfair maintains that his incident was an accident, which is why he was so embarrassed to be looped into a similar conversation as Morant since he was openly showing off his firearms on social media.
“It wasn’t like a police type of thing; it was more of me dealing with the NBA. And me thinking about Ja Morant when Ja Morant was just getting in trouble just now, I was embarrassed because the pot’s already pissed in for him. I was like, ‘Man, let this kid sit down. You embarrassing me, and I don’t want to be a part of that.’ Nothing with nothing, it’s like being young, making the wrong decisions,” Sebastian said on VladTV.
Telfair believes that his incident was an accident, which is why he doesn’t want to be associated with Morant. Meanwhile, the young Memphis Grizzlies star was going out of his way to get himself in trouble, which, according to “Bassy,” doesn’t apply to him.
All these legal issues get grouped for the most part, with no distinction between a guy who got in trouble or stayed out of trouble. Morant’s situation, though, is a bit different due to the suspension he received, and the amount of other behavioral issues that occurred at a similar time (such as punching a teenager in the face during a pickup basketball game).
In some ways, Telfair has a right to be upset with Ja, but for the most part, he just has to live with the mistakes he made and move on, which is precisely what the 24-year-old himself is trying to do.
